Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Monday evening paid a visit to legal icon and founder of Afe Babalola University, Chief Afe Babalola, in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
Obi was warmly welcomed by Babalola’s aide before heading into a private, closed-door meeting with the senior advocate. Sources indicate the visit was connected to the defamation case filed against human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi.
Seeking Amicable Resolution
Reports suggest that the meeting was facilitated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in an effort to mediate and resolve the legal matter amicably. Farotimi is currently facing charges over statements in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, where he accused Babalola of compromising the Supreme Court.
Following the one-hour meeting with Babalola, Obi proceeded to the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre along Afao Road, where he reportedly held a session with Farotimi. This visit is believed to be a continuation of his efforts to ease tensions surrounding the case.
Defamation and Cybercrime Charges
Farotimi was arraigned last week at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court for alleged defamation of character and granted bail of ₦50 million with strict conditions, which his team is still working to meet. Additionally, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has filed fresh charges against Farotimi at the Ado-Ekiti Federal High Court, accusing him of cybercrime.
Obi Remains Tight-Lipped
Efforts to obtain comments from Obi after the meeting proved unsuccessful, as he quietly left the premises without addressing journalists.
The trial resumes tomorrow at the Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court, while observers watch closely for developments in this
high-profile case.
