The hearing into Manchester City's alleged breaches of Premier League rules has officially concluded, though a verdict is not expected until 2025.
The proceedings, which began on September 16 at London’s International Dispute Resolution Centre, involved closing arguments presented to an independent panel on Friday, according to The Daily Mail.
City are accused of 115 rule violations, including 80 breaches of financial regulations between 2009 and 2018 and 35 charges related to failing to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation. Allegations include the failure to provide accurate financial details regarding sponsorship revenues and manager/player salaries.
Potential Sanctions for Manchester City
If found guilty, the reigning English champions could face severe penalties, including relegation from the Premier League. However, Manchester City has consistently denied any wrongdoing and is expected to appeal any unfavorable ruling, potentially delaying sanctions.
The Premier League initially filed these charges in February 2023, marking a significant investigation into financial compliance. The accusations also include breaches of UEFA and Premier League financial rules during the Sheikh Mansour era, which began with his takeover in 2008.
Achievements Amid Controversy
Manchester City has dominated English football over the last decade, winning eight of the last 13 Premier League titles and clinching their first Champions League trophy in 2023. Despite these accomplishments, the club has faced ongoing scrutiny from rival fans and critics due to these allegations.
Current Form
On the pitch, Pep Guardiola’s side has struggled recently, managing just one win in their last nine matches across all competitions.
The case’s resolution remains uncertain, and its outcome could significantly impact the future of the Premier League’s financial integrity and enforcement.
