Shettima Apologizes Over Sokoto Airstrike, Commiserates with Victims

Abuja, Nigeria – Vice President Kashim Shettima has issued a formal apology on behalf of the Federal Government over a recent airstrike that mistakenly claimed the lives of about ten villagers in Sokoto State. The incident, which occurred during a military operation targeting the Lakurawa insurgent group in Silame Local Government Area, left several others injured.

Shettima, speaking in a statement released by his Media Assistant, Stanley Nkwocha, expressed deep regret over the civilian casualties, describing the occurrence as one of those unfortunate moments when innocent lives are caught in the crossfire of military efforts to combat terrorism.

"I would like to extend my deep sympathies and condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the families of those who lost their lives in this operation. It is disheartening and painful to witness such tragic outcomes as our Armed Forces continue to make sacrifices to protect the nation," the Vice President stated.

He further emphasized the importance of public support for military operations, noting that accurate and actionable information from local communities is crucial for preventing such mishaps. "Our brave officers are staking their lives to rid the nation of terror. Let us assist them in ensuring precision in these operations," Shettima said.

The airstrike, which targeted logistics bases of the Lakurawa terrorist group in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, was part of the coordinated efforts of Operation Fansan Yamma, involving air and land military components.

Shettima assured Sokoto residents of the federal government’s commitment to justice and the elimination of terrorism in the country, stressing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains steadfast in ensuring peace and security for all Nigerians.

On the same day, the Vice President also led a federal delegation to Jigawa State to condole with Governor Umar Namadi, who recently lost his mother, Hajiya Mariam Namadi, and eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi, in quick succession.

During the condolence visit, Shettima described death as an inevitable part of life, encouraging the governor to find solace in his faith. “We are all from Allah, and to Him we shall return. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace and may Allah grant you and your family the strength to bear these losses," he said.

Accompanying the Vice President were Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Deputy Chief of Staff Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, and other government officials.

The Federal Government continues to assure citizens of its determination to protect lives and property, pledging unwavering support to rid Nigeria of terrorism and violence.
