A call for urgent regulatory action has been made against the popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija (BBNaija), as Nigerian activist lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, formally petitions the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). In a strongly-worded letter addressed to the Director General of NBC, Idam demands the immediate ban or strict regulation of the show within 30 days, citing consistent violations of public morality.
The petition, titled “Urgent need to ban or regulate the content of the television programme described as ‘Big Brother Naija’ for obscene, indecent, and profane content, pursuant to the NBC Act 1999”, accuses BBNaija of broadcasting explicit and pornographic content across national television and social media platforms. Idam insists that such materials are easily accessible to underage audiences despite the show’s 18+ rating.
“The show is not only aired on national TV but its profane content is proudly shared on the verified social media handles of the host company, in total disregard for public morality,” he stated.
Citing previous sanctions imposed by NBC on artists like Olamide, Phyno, and Wizkid, Idam questioned the commission’s silence on BBNaija's content, which he described as lacking in educational, artistic, scientific, or literary value. He warned that the programme contributes to the erosion of societal values and is especially harmful in a nation grappling with rising insecurity and moral decay.
Idam is urging NBC to restrict BBNaija to specialized adult content channels with strict regulation and to prohibit the distribution of explicit content on social media by the show’s organizers.
He emphasized that failure by NBC to act within 30 days will result in legal proceedings aimed at enforcing content standards and protecting public morality.
