The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a major policy change that will affect candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions. Going forward, Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates will no longer be permitted to combine results from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) when applying for admission.
JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this during a virtual meeting with Vice-Chancellors and Heads of Admissions in Abuja. He emphasized that results from two different examination bodies will not be accepted for admission screening, stressing the need for uniformity and credibility in the admission process.
In addition, Oloyede highlighted subject requirements for different streams, noting that science students must include Mathematics in their top subjects, while arts students must have English. He also directed that under-16 candidates be assessed through a dedicated post-UTME process, even in institutions that have suspended such screening for other applicants.
The JAMB boss explained that the board will compile academic records and forward only candidates who meet all benchmarks to tertiary institutions for further screening.
WAEC and NECO remain Nigeria’s foremost examining bodies, but this policy marks a shift in how their certificates will be recognized in higher education admissions. The new rule is expected to take effect from the 2025/2026 admission cycle.
