Lawmaker Gives WAEC 7-Day Ultimatum Over Withheld Results

A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Hon. Chinedu Ogah, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), demanding the release of the 2025 WASSCE results withheld from over 192,000 candidates due to alleged exam malpractice.

Hon. Ogah, who represents Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State, expressed strong dissatisfaction with WAEC's decision, describing it as a deliberate act of sabotage against Nigerian youths. He stated that many affected candidates are at risk of missing university admissions and could be pushed into negative societal behaviors if their results remain withheld.

“It is very unfortunate that after writing both WAEC and JAMB, candidates are now being denied access to their results on flimsy excuses. This action will prevent them from gaining admission and could push them into societal vices,” Ogah said.

He further argued that if malpractice was truly observed, disciplinary actions should have been taken during or immediately after the examination, not months later. Comparing Nigeria’s experience with other West African countries, the lawmaker highlighted that such large-scale result withholding is rare elsewhere.

Ogah has threatened legal action if WAEC fails to comply within seven days, warning:

“WAEC should release the results within seven days or I will take them to court for abuse of office.”

The 2025 WASSCE results were released on August 4, but WAEC confirmed that 192,089 candidates' results were withheld due to alleged involvement in malpractice. The action has since sparked public concern, especially among candidates awaiting admission into tertiary institutions.
